Chapter 40

Subject: The Epitaph of Twilight
Sender: Wiseman
Message:
Please wait a little longer on the Epitaph of Twilight.
Furthermore – if my guess is correct, you are in a rare event.
Rather, perhaps you could be the center of the event and the ending point?
However,
I can’t be too sure.
I recommend that you first contact the legendary hacker Helba.

We met at the chaos gate of Carmina Gadelica.

“Unfortunately, there is not enough information,” Wiseman said first. “The three of us here, including myself, don’t have enough cards yet.”

He looked at me with a gentle smile.

“So that’s my suggestion. As I wrote in the email, I think we should meet Helba first. As soon as possible too. If possible, right now.”

“Meet with Helba?”

“Undoubtedly, the legendary hacker Helba will have some clue about this series of incidents. Getting her help is what you need to do.”

“That being said… Helba is said to be a phantom… always appearing suddenly, says what she wants to say and then disappears,” I mumbled.

“There is generally no way for me to contact Helba.”

“Helba is in Net Slum,” Wiseman said.

“Net Slum? What’s that?”BlackRose asked in return.

But I was familiar with the words.

Now, wait a minute. Could that be

“Yes. The corrupt data deleted by Lios uttered that name.”

Wiseman nodded.

“Net Slum is an illegal server created in The World by Helba.”

“An illegal server…”

In other words, an irregular root town.”

Irregular? Is it an illegal town made with hacks and cheats?

“Do you know the location of Net Slum?”

“Of course. However, I only know the area words,” Wiseman said.

“I have never been there myself. I don’t think I even want to go there. I hear that city is a horrible place for outsiders. Net Slum is a paradise for hackers, a kind of lawless area.”

“Then, we’re in danger…”

“But, from piecing together your story so far, Helba is probably ‘interested’ in you. I don’t fully understand why she’s interested, but if you’re together, at least you won’t be suddenly destroyed,” Wiseman said.

“Of course, I’m not one hundred percent sure it’s safe. How do you feel about it? I’ll leave the decision to you.” Wiseman said.

It was needless to think about it.

Yeah. Let’s go, to Net Slum,” I answered immediately.

I had Wiseman perform the transfer procedure at the chaos gate.

Just then, I suddenly felt someone’s gaze on me. Someone was hiding and watching us. That’s the feeling I got.

However, when I looked around, I couldn’t see anyone.

“What’s wrong?” BlackRose, who took notice of my state, asked me.

I shook my head. It seemed to have been a misunderstanding.

I may have become nervous by going to a disturbing place.

“No, it’s nothing. I thought I felt something.

“So, are you ready?”

Wiseman turned around and looked at us.

“You should think of the place you are going to as a field, not a town. Never let your guard down…”

A noise came and the screen went black.

A moment later we were standing in a twilit area we had never seen before.

Was this a town?

It was like a city where a few bombs had fallen and buildings collapsed.

Ruins rather than a slum. Other may say it looked more like a trash heap than ruins.

A decaying torii stood near the chaos gate we transferred to.

“This place is Net Slum?”

There were PCs with emoticons directly on their faces and PCs that looked like a tatami room without three-dimensionality. These were the residents of this town. When they noticed us, they slowly woke up.

It was similar to a pack of carnivorous animals hunting in the grass for prey.

“Outsiders.”

I heard a whisper.

“Outsiders have arrived.”

“Outsiders, you say?”

“Some outsiders.”

“Outsiders! Outsiders!”

Wiseman spoke.

“I am Wiseman. Today I came to this town as an assistant to Kite. I want to see your boss, Helba.”

“Should we pet them?”

“Should we destroy them?”

“Break them apart… their equipment will sell for good prices…”

As they muttered, the non-human inhabitants approached.

“What are you guys doing?!”

BlackRose quickly pulled out her big sword and stood at the ready.

“If you get any closer, I’ll strike!”

“Wait, don’t strike. I want to avoid trouble before talking to Helba,” Wiseman said.

We’re in the middle of trouble right now! Come on!”

Suddenly something happened.

“Please wait.”

A dignified voice was heard above us.

When we looked up, Helba was floating in the evening sky.

“They are my guests. Don’t touch them.”

As Helba spoke, the residents of Net Slum retreated and disappeared like a shadow.

Helba slowly landed in front of us.

I couldn’t figure out her expression as it was blocked by the mask that covered her eyes.

I see you’ve arrived in this town.”

Helba spoke in a tone that made sound amused, instead of sounding harsh.

“Well, I want to ask you various things, Helba.”

“I’ll tell you as much as you want. Whatever you need, whenever you need it,” Helba said as she looked up at the sky.

“But unfortunately now is not a good time. I have too many customers.”

“Huh?”

Immediately after that, a high-pitched sound rang out.

This sound was…

The space several meters away from us became distorted and a merchant NPC appeared.

“Lios!” I yelled in surprise.
